Graphic Design Typography

Graphic design is either the finished product, or the process of creating and combining different symbols, words or images to make a visual representation of a message or idea. It is used in nearly everything you see that has been printed and contains words and images.


The use of pictures, colors, and designs is what makes graphic design such a diverse THING. Different people might depict a message a different way, and a good graphic designer is one who can find a way to create an image that will appeal to most people. The image must be memorable and make a real statement.

These elements are brought together using typography, visual arts and page layout techniques.

The kind of typography most often used in graphic design is called display typography. This is when words and text are used in an artistic way. Although the words may be easily readable, this is not always the goal of display typography. The words are there to represent an idea more than to share a message. They interact with the other images in a way that is more powerful than if they were printed on their own.

Graphic design typography uses a wide array of fonts and sizes to contribute to the overall effect. The color of the letters is also used to invoke a certain feel. The words may be intermingled, or circling around an image. Often they are there almost purely for visual effect and not even necessarily to be read at all. They become artistic tools and symbols.

Book covers, posters, logos, and product packaging as well as images on clothing are all places you might see graphic design typography used.

The creativity required to utilize letters in a way that is artistic and attractive without concern for readability is one of the many things that distinguishes a good graphic designer. In his eyes, everyday objects can be transformed from their traditional roles and play an entirely new part in the image being created.

Still, typography also must often be used in a more conventional way, as well. Sometimes an important part of the message is actually the text, and the images that go along with it are just meant to enhance the message that is read. In these cases there is, of course, still room for some creativity. The font, size and color will all contribute to the message, even if the word placement is not so much a part of the art.

Graphic design typography is only one aspect of graphic design, but it is one that can sometimes be one of the most important elements in the finished product. Sometimes this is because of the actual typed message, but very often is also because of the creative placement and usage of the words.
